Pharmacological Mechanism

α2-adrenergic auto- and heteroreceptor antagonist → increases both noradrenergic and serotonergic firing. Blocks 5-HT2A/2C and 5-HT3 → released serotonin preferentially activates 5-HT1A. Potent H1 antagonism drives sedation and appetite stimulation. No SERT/NET reuptake inhibition — hence minimal sexual dysfunction or GI side effects of SSRIs.
