Methamphetamine

Category: stimulant

Aliases: meth, crystal, Desoxyn, N-methylamphetamine

Pharmacological Mechanism

Potent monoamine releaser — a TAAR1 agonist that reverses DAT/NET and VMAT2 to dump dopamine and norepinephrine into the synapse, producing prolonged CNS stimulation, euphoria, and wakefulness. More lipophilic and longer-acting than amphetamine; dopaminergic neurotoxicity and cardiovascular strain at high/chronic doses. Prescribed (Desoxyn) rarely for ADHD/obesity.
