β-carboline alkaloid from Banisteriopsis caapi and Peganum harmala; a reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (RIMA). In ayahuasca it inhibits gut/hepatic MAO-A so that orally-ingested DMT survives to reach the brain. Mildly psychoactive itself; also a DYRK1A kinase inhibitor under research interest.
