Pharmacological Mechanism

Most abundant free AA in plasma and muscle. Primary fuel for enterocytes and lymphocytes (glutaminolysis). Nitrogen shuttle (amide group transfer). Precursor to GABA, glutathione (after hydrolysis to glutamate), and purine/pyrimidine biosynthesis. Conditionally essential in catabolic states (burns, trauma, critical illness).
