Amino sugar — a constituent of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as hyaluronan, keratan sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate. Proposed to down-regulate IL-1β-driven catabolic cascades in chondrocytes and raise synovial hyaluronan concentration. Evidence for structural disease modification in knee OA is modest; symptomatic effect roughly comparable to acetaminophen in meta-analyses. Sulfate salt form preferred over HCl.
