Aliases: Rb1, 20(S)-Ginsenoside Rb1
Protopanaxadiol-class ginsenoside (sugars at C3 and C20). The most abundant ginsenoside in most Panax ginseng roots and the principal precursor to compound K — gut microbiota (β-glucosidases from Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides) hydrolyse Rb1 to compound K, which is the dominant systemic metabolite by exposure (AUC). Rb1 itself has low oral bioavailability (~5%) and a long terminal t½ (~20–30 h) reflecting deep-tissue redistribution. Anxiolytic and NO-mediated vasodilatory effects in rodents. Inter-individual microbiome composition drives substantial variation in plasma compound K.
