Isoflavone phytoestrogen with ER-β preferential affinity. Also a tyrosine-kinase inhibitor at micromolar concentrations (basis for early anticancer interest) and a topoisomerase-II interactor. Gut microbiota metabolise genistein to dihydrogenistein and 6′-OH-O-desmethylangolensin; these metabolites vary widely between individuals.
