Pharmacological Mechanism

17α-ethinyl estradiol — synthetic estrogen designed to resist hepatic first-pass metabolism. Binds ER with similar affinity to endogenous estradiol but ~50× longer plasma half-life. Backbone of combined oral contraceptives.
