Pharmacological Mechanism

At low doses (3–6 mg) acts as a selective histamine H1 antagonist with minimal anticholinergic / antiadrenergic activity — sleep-maintenance hypnotic. Higher antidepressant doses (75–300 mg) lose the H1 selectivity.
