Third-generation cephalosporin β-lactam — extended gram-negative + good gram-positive coverage. Once-daily IV/IM dosing makes it a workhorse for inpatient pneumonia, meningitis (CSF penetration), gonorrhea single-dose. Biliary > renal clearance — sludging in gallbladder.
