Hexanoic acid (C6) diester of 1,3-butanediol. Gut lipase liberates hexanoic acid + 1,3-BD. Hexanoic acid enters portal β-oxidation → ketones; BD goes to liver → BHB. Better GI tolerance than pure ketone esters because the C6 fatty-acid taste is less objectionable and the release is slower.
