Pharmacological Mechanism

A crystalline 1:1 molar salt that co-precipitates [[aspartame]] with the [[acesulfame-potassium]] anion (about 64% aspartame, 36% acesulfame by weight). In solution it simply dissociates into its two parent sweeteners, which act independently on the sweet T1R2/T1R3 receptor with well-known sweetness synergy and an improved sweetness profile/stability versus either alone (net ~350x sucrose). Disposition is that of the two ions: the aspartame moiety is hydrolysed presystemically to aspartate, phenylalanine and methanol, while acesulfame is absorbed and excreted unchanged. Because it is an aspartame source it carries the phenylketonuria (PKU) phenylalanine caution. Non-nutritive and non-glycaemic.
