Xanthine oxidase inhibitor — converts to active oxipurinol; both compete with hypoxanthine + xanthine for XO active site. Lowers serum uric acid in gout + tumor lysis syndrome. SCAR (severe cutaneous adverse reactions) risk in HLA-B*5801 carriers (Asian / African ancestry).
