Minor ketone body formed by non-enzymatic decarboxylation of acetoacetate. ~20% exhaled via lungs (fruity breath odour in DKA and deep ketosis), the rest metabolised by CYP2E1 to formaldehyde / formic acid / acetate. Not actively transported — crosses membranes passively. Minimal metabolic role.
