Core Principles & Analysis
The small bandwidth of superconducting cavities makes the study of dynamic Lorentz force detuning and its compensation indispensable for pulsed-mode operation of high-gradient accelerators.
An optimized design for five-cell 650 MHz βg = 0.9 elliptical cavities — for the high-energy section of the 1 GeV H⁻ linac of the proposed Indian Spallation Neutron Source — is achieved by suitably inserting inter-cell stiffeners.
The design follows a sequential methodology: study static detuning and tunability first, then find structural modes and dynamic detuning values via transient structural dynamics.
