Regular Expressions

A miniature language for describing text patterns, born in logic and now ubiquitous in every editor and toolkit.

Core Principles & Analysis

• Stephen Cole Kleene defined regular languages in the 1950s from neural net models.
• Ken Thompson implemented the pattern matcher in QED in 1968, then grep.
• Practical 'regex' dialects exceed formal regular languages with backreferences and lookaround.
