Core Principles & Analysis

• Hsu et al. reported superconductivity in PbO-type α-FeSe in 2008 (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 105, 14262–14264).
• Bulk FeSe superconducts at 8 K at ambient pressure; intercalation or applied pressure raises the transition to 38–48 K.
• A single epitaxial monolayer on strontium titanate reached 70 K in 2013–2014 and then above 100 K (Ge et al., Nature Materials).
