Metglas amorphous ribbon was first manufactured in 1976 by Liebermann and Graham, building on the first metallic glass (Au₇₅Si₂₅) made at Caltech in 1960 by Klement, Willens and Duwez.
Metglas 2605 — 80% iron and 20% boron — has a Curie temperature of 646 K (373 °C) and room-temperature saturation magnetization of 1.56 tesla.
Commercialized in the early 1980s for low-loss power distribution transformers, amorphous iron-based alloys cut motor hysteresis losses by 75–90% at 50–400 Hz with coercivity typically 30–100 A/m.
