High-purity aluminum oxide technical ceramic with extreme hardness.
Core Principles & Analysis
Parts are pressed from powder and sintered near 1,600 °C, shrinking about 15-20% linearly as they densify.
At Mohs hardness 9 it is exceeded among common materials only by a few carbides, cubic boron nitride, and diamond.
It insulates virtually every automotive spark plug, and translucent grades such as GE's Lucalox (1961) form sodium street-lamp arc tubes.
