Europium is a ductile, silver-colored metal and the most reactive lanthanide element.

Eugene-Anatole Demarcay discovered europium in 1901 and named it after the continent of Europe.
It is the most chemically reactive lanthanide and exists in both +2 and +3 oxidation states with strikingly different luminescence.
Europium phosphors produced the red of color television screens and provide the anti-counterfeiting glow in euro banknotes.
