Messier 90 (M90)

Virgo Cluster spiral whose light is blueshifted — it is falling toward us, not away.

Core Principles & Analysis

• Only a handful of bright galaxies show a blueshift; M90 is one.
• Star formation is shutting down across its disc as the cluster strips its gas.
• Messier catalogued it in 1781, in his last great sweep of Virgo.

Specifications & Metrics

• GALAXY TYPE: Spiral (SAab)
• DISTANCE: ~59 million light-years
