Sphingomyelin
Constitutes a major component of myelin in nerve cell membranes and a significant structural lipid in other cell membranes, being the only phospholipid not derived from glycerol.
Key Functions:
- Essential for the structural integrity and insulation of myelin.
- Involved in membrane fluidity and lipid raft formation.
- Serves as a precursor for ceramide, a signaling molecule.
Interacting Systems & Components:
- Myelin Sheath (major component)
- Cell Membrane (structural component, especially lipid rafts)
- Ceramide (product of hydrolysis)
- Sphingosine (component)
- Sphingomyelinase (enzyme that hydrolyzes it)
