Nucleus Pulposus Cell

Cells found in the gelatinous core of the intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus), primarily responsible for maintaining the hydration and biomechanical properties of the disc.

Key Functions:

  • Produces and maintains the extracellular matrix of the nucleus pulposus.
  • Contributes to the shock-absorbing and flexible properties of the intervertebral disc.
  • Rich in proteoglycans, which attract and retain water.
