Alveoli Type II Cell

Also known as pneumocyte type II cells, these cuboidal cells are found in the alveoli of the lungs, responsible for producing and secreting surfactant, which reduces surface tension and prevents alveolar collapse.

Key Functions:

  • Produces and secretes pulmonary surfactant.
  • Reduces surface tension in the alveoli, preventing collapse.
  • Acts as progenitor cells for type I pneumocytes.
  • Involved in alveolar repair.
